Indy Doors supplies Von Duprin exit devices and related commercial hardware for schools, healthcare facilities, offices, retail properties, warehouses, multifamily buildings, hospitality properties and public facilities throughout Indianapolis and Central Indiana. Von Duprin offers mechanical and electrified exit hardware designed for openings that must support reliable egress, security and frequent use.

Exit hardware is part of a life-safety opening. Device type, door construction, frame, fire rating, trim, strikes, power and access-control functions must be coordinated carefully. Indy Doors helps contractors, architects, facility managers and property owners identify compatible components before installation or replacement work begins.

37 YEARS OF DOOR EXPERTISE.

Panic Hardware and Fire Exit Hardware.

Panic hardware is designed to unlatch an exit door when occupants push the touchpad or crossbar. Fire exit hardware performs a similar egress function but is specifically listed for use on fire-rated doors and does not use mechanical dogging that would hold the latch retracted.

The required hardware depends on the building occupancy, occupant load, door rating and adopted code. Project requirements should be confirmed by the design professional and authority having jurisdiction. Indy Doors can help supply product data and coordinate the opening with the specified hardware.

Von Duprin Exit Device Configurations

Von Duprin exit devices are available in several configurations for single doors and pairs.

Rim Exit Devices

Rim devices latch to a strike mounted on the frame or removable mullion. They are commonly used on single doors and pairs with a mullion because of their straightforward design and serviceability.

Mortise Exit Devices

Mortise devices use a lock case installed within the door edge. They can provide additional security and are used where the door construction and opening requirements support mortise preparation.

Surface and Concealed Vertical Rod Devices

Vertical rod devices secure the top and, in some configurations, the bottom of a door. Surface rods are visible on the door face, while concealed rods are routed inside the door. Pairs without a center mullion often require vertical-rod or other coordinated hardware.

Exit Trim, Electric Strikes and Accessories

The exterior side of an exit device may use a lever, pull, keyed trim or another control depending on how entry should operate. Von Duprin offers exit trim in multiple functions and designs to coordinate security with the building's appearance.

Electric strikes can provide controlled entry while maintaining free egress from the interior. Other options may include request-to-exit monitoring, latch-bolt monitoring, electric latch retraction, security indicators, power transfers and power supplies. Each component must be coordinated with the door, frame and access-control system.

Electrified Exit Devices and Access Control

Electrified Von Duprin hardware can connect an exit opening to card readers, schedules, remote releases and other security systems. Electric latch retraction may be used where the touchpad must retract electronically for controlled push-pull operation during selected periods.

Electrical requirements, power supplies, fire-alarm interfaces and sequences of operation should be identified before ordering. Indy Doors can coordinate the physical opening and hardware preparation, while the security integrator and electrical team handle system design, wiring and programming.

Replacing or Repairing Existing Exit Hardware

Existing exit devices may develop problems such as difficult operation, incomplete latching, loose trim, dragging rods or inconsistent electric functions. The cause may involve the device itself, door alignment, hinges, closer, frame, strike or power supply.

Indy Doors can help identify replacement hardware and compatible components. Before replacing a device, it is important to document the door material, width, handing, device type, fire label, trim, electrical options and existing mounting conditions.

Common Questions

frequently asked
questions.

  • What is the difference between a panic bar and an exit device?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but "panic hardware" describes hardware that meets specific egress requirements for certain occupancies. Exit devices include a broader range of touchpad-operated products, including fire exit hardware for rated doors.

  • Can a fire-rated exit device be left unlocked with dogging?

Mechanical dogging is generally not used on fire exit hardware because the door must positively latch when closed. Electrified functions may be available for qualifying systems, but they must preserve the required fire-door operation.

  • Can Von Duprin exit devices connect to card access?

Yes. Compatible devices can be combined with electric strikes, electrified trim, electric latch retraction, monitoring switches and other access-control components. The sequence of operation and power requirements should be coordinated before ordering.

  • How do I know whether I need a rim or vertical-rod device?

The choice depends on whether the opening is a single door or pair, whether a mullion is present, the door and frame construction, fire rating, appearance and security needs. Existing preparations also influence replacement options.

  • Why does an exit device fail to latch?

Possible causes include door sag, hinge wear, closer problems, frame movement, misaligned strikes, rod adjustment or worn device components. The complete opening should be inspected rather than assuming the exit device is the only problem.
