Pemko Thresholds, Weatherstripping and Gasketing in Indianapolis, IN.

Indy Doors supplies Pemko thresholds, weatherstripping, door bottoms and gasketing for commercial and institutional projects throughout Indianapolis and Central Indiana. Pemko has manufactured weatherstripping since 1952 and has since expanded into a full line of architectural door accessories, including thresholds, fire and smoke gasketing, perimeter and brush seals, astragals, continuous geared hinges, lites and louvers.
These are the components that decide whether an opening actually performs the way the drawings say it does. A correctly specified door with the wrong threshold leaks water, fails an air test or trips an accessibility review. Since 1989, Indy Doors has helped customers get these details right at the schedule stage rather than at punch list.

Why Sealing an Opening Matters in Central Indiana
Indiana openings deal with wind driven rain, summer humidity, freezing temperatures and a large annual temperature swing. Gaps that seem trivial on a shop drawing become drafts, water intrusion, ice at the sill and unhappy occupants once the building is occupied and the doors are cycling all day.
Sealing also carries code weight. Smoke gasketing is required on many fire rated assemblies, sound rated assemblies depend on a continuous seal at the perimeter and the sill, and thresholds have to satisfy accessibility limits on height and bevel. None of that is optional, and none of it can be fixed with a heavier door.
Pemko Product Categories
Availability varies by profile, length, material and finish. The categories below cover the products that appear most often on Central Indiana commercial specifications.
Thresholds and Saddles
Pemko manufactures aluminum, bronze and stainless thresholds in a wide range of profiles, including half saddles, ramp and offset saddles, panic thresholds and thermal barrier units for openings where conductive heat loss matters. Profiles are available with vinyl or rubber inserts to seal against a door bottom, and skid resistant surfaces are offered where the sill sits in a wet path of travel.
Door Bottoms and Sweeps
The bottom of the door is where most air, water and sound gets through. Pemko offers automatic door bottoms that drop a seal when the door closes and retract when it opens, surface mounted sweeps, door shoes, security door bottoms and sweeps with a rain drip for exterior openings. Automatic door bottoms are common on sound rated and smoke rated assemblies where a fixed sweep would not seal reliably.
Perimeter and Brush Gasketing
Perimeter gasketing seals the head and jambs. Options include kerf in foam weatherstrip, adjustable jamb weatherstrip that can be tuned after installation and standard or heavy duty profiles for higher abuse openings. Brush gasketing is offered in a range of retainer angles with nylon brush of varying lengths, which suits openings where a compression seal would create too much closing force.
Fire and Smoke Gasketing
Pemko produces adhesive backed fire and smoke gasketing along with intumescent edge sealing products that expand under heat to close the gap around a rated door. These are listed products, and the correct one has to be selected for the specific rating and assembly. Substituting a general purpose weatherstrip for a listed smoke seal is a common and consequential error on rated openings.
Astragals and Meeting Stiles
Pairs of doors need a seal at the meeting stile. Pemko offers split astragals, overlapping and T astragals, adjustable astragals, mullion gasketing and security astragals for openings where the gap between leaves is a vulnerability. Astragal selection has to account for the closing sequence, which is why it usually gets reviewed alongside the coordinator and the flush bolts.

Continuous Geared Hinges, Lites and Louvers
Beyond sealing products, Pemko manufactures continuous geared and stainless steel hinges for heavy and high abuse doors, along with lite kits and louvers for openings that need vision panels or ventilation. Fire rated lite kits and louvers are available for rated assemblies, subject to size limits set by the listing.
Accessibility, Fire and Sound Requirements
Threshold height and bevel are accessibility items, not aesthetic ones, and an oversized threshold is one of the easier ways to fail a review on an otherwise compliant entrance. Smoke gasketing requirements follow the fire rating and the assembly listing. Sound rated openings need a continuous seal at the head, jambs and sill, which usually means perimeter gasketing plus an automatic door bottom rather than a sweep.
Pemko offers sound tested, smoke labeled, fire labeled, skid resistant and ADA compliant products across the line, which makes it possible to satisfy several of these requirements with components from one manufacturer rather than assembling a set from mismatched sources.

Common Questions
frequently asked
questions.
What is the difference between a door sweep and an automatic door bottom?
A sweep is fixed to the bottom of the door and drags lightly across the floor or threshold at all times. An automatic door bottom drops a seal only when the door closes and lifts it when the door opens. Automatic door bottoms seal more reliably and are typical on sound rated and smoke rated openings.
Does a threshold have to meet accessibility height limits?
On accessible routes, yes. Threshold height and the bevel on any change in level are regulated, and an oversized or square edged threshold can put an otherwise compliant entrance out of compliance. The specific requirement should be confirmed for the building and the opening.
Can ordinary weatherstripping be used on a fire rated door?
No. Rated openings require listed smoke or fire gasketing selected for that assembly and rating. General purpose weatherstrip is not a substitute, and using it can compromise the label on a door that is otherwise correctly built and installed.
Why does my exterior door still leak water with weatherstripping installed?
Water usually gets in at the sill rather than the perimeter. A threshold without the correct profile, a missing rain drip, a door bottom that does not contact the threshold insert or a sill that has settled will all leak with perfectly good jamb weatherstrip installed. The bottom of the opening is the first place to look.
What information is needed to quote Pemko products?
Helpful information includes door width and height, single or pair, swing direction, whether the opening is exterior, the fire or sound rating if any, the existing threshold and sill condition, the required finish and the number of openings. Photos of the existing sill and jamb condition are useful on replacement work.
