Thresholds and Saddles

Pemko manufactures aluminum, bronze and stainless thresholds in a wide range of profiles, including half saddles, ramp and offset saddles, panic thresholds and thermal barrier units for openings where conductive heat loss matters. Profiles are available with vinyl or rubber inserts to seal against a door bottom, and skid resistant surfaces are offered where the sill sits in a wet path of travel.

Door Bottoms and Sweeps

The bottom of the door is where most air, water and sound gets through. Pemko offers automatic door bottoms that drop a seal when the door closes and retract when it opens, surface mounted sweeps, door shoes, security door bottoms and sweeps with a rain drip for exterior openings. Automatic door bottoms are common on sound rated and smoke rated assemblies where a fixed sweep would not seal reliably.

Perimeter and Brush Gasketing

Perimeter gasketing seals the head and jambs. Options include kerf in foam weatherstrip, adjustable jamb weatherstrip that can be tuned after installation and standard or heavy duty profiles for higher abuse openings. Brush gasketing is offered in a range of retainer angles with nylon brush of varying lengths, which suits openings where a compression seal would create too much closing force.

Fire and Smoke Gasketing

Pemko produces adhesive backed fire and smoke gasketing along with intumescent edge sealing products that expand under heat to close the gap around a rated door. These are listed products, and the correct one has to be selected for the specific rating and assembly. Substituting a general purpose weatherstrip for a listed smoke seal is a common and consequential error on rated openings.

Astragals and Meeting Stiles

Pairs of doors need a seal at the meeting stile. Pemko offers split astragals, overlapping and T astragals, adjustable astragals, mullion gasketing and security astragals for openings where the gap between leaves is a vulnerability. Astragal selection has to account for the closing sequence, which is why it usually gets reviewed alongside the coordinator and the flush bolts.

Continuous Geared Hinges, Lites and Louvers

Beyond sealing products, Pemko manufactures continuous geared and stainless steel hinges for heavy and high abuse doors, along with lite kits and louvers for openings that need vision panels or ventilation. Fire rated lite kits and louvers are available for rated assemblies, subject to size limits set by the listing.

Accessibility, Fire and Sound Requirements

Threshold height and bevel are accessibility items, not aesthetic ones, and an oversized threshold is one of the easier ways to fail a review on an otherwise compliant entrance. Smoke gasketing requirements follow the fire rating and the assembly listing. Sound rated openings need a continuous seal at the head, jambs and sill, which usually means perimeter gasketing plus an automatic door bottom rather than a sweep.
